THREE MEMBERS OF ONE FAMILY INCLUDING A LITTLE BOY ALL DIE WHEN THEIR BOAT CAP SIZES IN THE ATLANTIC AND TONIGHT, THE LONE SURVIVOR SAYS HE TRIED BUT FAILED TO KEEP THAT 9-YEAR-OLD ALIVE CLUTCHING HIM IN THE CHILLY AND DARK WATER OFF STUART FOR HOURS. JOAN MURRAY IS LIVE WHERE THAT ONE SURVIVOR CONTINUES TO RECOVER TONIGHT. JOAN? Reporter: AND HE’S IN THE HOSPITAL TONIGHT, RICK, SAID TO BE IN SERIOUS CONDITION. NOW, HE HAS TOLD INVESTIGATORS FOR SOME REASON THE BOAT STARTED TAKING ON WATER. HE MANAGED TO MAKE IT TO SHORE BUT NO ONE ELSE DID. AND JONES LOVED TAKING HIS SON OUT TO SEA. SADLY, THEIR FISHING TRIP WOULD BE THEIR LAST. JONES, HIS 9-YEAR-OLD SON, JADEN, AND HIS STEPFATHER, WILLIS BELL ALL DROWNED AFTER JONES’ 24-FOOT SEA BOAT SANK. I LOVE MY BEST FRIEND, YOU KNOW. A FOURTH MAN SOMEHOW SURVIVED. JONES’ COUSIN, ROBERT STUART, WAIVED DOWN A RESCUE CHOPPER AFTER TREADING WATER ALL NIGHT AND SWIMMING TO SHORE EARLY MONDAY, STUART TOLD INVESTIGATORS THEY WERE IN 80 FEET OF WATER 9:00 SUNDAY MORNING WHEN THE BOAT BEGAN FILLING. AFTER IT BECAME SUBMERGED THEY ALL CLUNG TO THE SIDE. THE SURVIVOR SAID THAT HE TRIED TO KEEP HIS HAND ON THE 9-YEAR-OLD, AND THE 9-YEAR-OLD HAD A LIFE PRESERVER ON. HE DID HIS BEST, BUT ROUGH SEAS ALL NIGHT BECAME IMPOSSIBLE, OBVIOUSLY FOR HIM TO SAVE THAT BOY. THE BOATERS WERE REPORTED MISSING SUNDAY EVENING. Reporter: JOAN’ WIFE HELD OUT HOPE THEY WOULD BE SAFE, BUTTING OUT AN APPEAL BEFORE GETTING DEVASTATING NEWS. JONES WORKED AS A MIAMI-DADE CORRECTIONS OFFICER BEFORE JOINING THE MARTIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT TWO YEARS AGO. HIS STEPFATHER, WILLIS BELL, WAS A MIAMI-DADE CORRECTIONS DEPUTY FOR 25 YEARS BEFORE RETIRING. JONES’ FAMILY CAN SCARCELY BELIEVE HE’S GONE, STRUGGLING TO UNDERSTAND HOW A SIMPLE TRIP COULD TURN SO DEADLY SO QUICKLY. ALL HE EVER TOLD ME WAS HE WANTED TO BUY A BOAT. HE TOLD IS AND HE BOUGHT ANOTHER BOAT, AND THAT’S WHAT HE LOVED DOING. AND JADEN WAS A LITTLE FIRE CRACKER, YOU KNOW, HE WAS A REAL OUTGOING KID. REAL HAPPY. HE LOVED FISHING JUST LIKE HIS DAD. AND NOW INVESTIGATORS WILL TRY TO FIND WHAT WENT WRONG ON JONES’ FISHING BOAT THAT FORCE TODAY TO SINK AND SEND THREE FAMILY MEMBERS TO THEIR DEATHS.
