Elena Sokolova (RUS) – 1998 Nagano, Figure Skating, Ladies’ Short Program

>>NICOLE BOBEK WAS THE LAST OF THE THREE AMERICAN LADIES TO ARRIVE AT THE OLYMPICS. SHE WAS ALSO THE LAST OF THE AMERICAN LADIES TO ARRIVE AT WHITE RING. A SHORT TIME AGO, 35 MINUTES BEFORE HER WARMUP, NICOLE BOBEK CAME INTO THE BUILDING. AT THE SAME TIME, GOLD MEDAL FAVORITE, MICHELLE KWAN HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE SHORT PROGRAM FACED THE MEDIA IN WHAT THEY CALLED THE MIXED ZONE AND TARA LIPINSKI WHO ALSO SKATED BEAUTIFULLY TONIGHT FOUND HER WAY INTO THE STANDS WHERE SHE JOINED HER AMERICAN TEAMMATES. CURRENT STANDINGS — NOW LET’S GO DOWN TO TRACY WHO IS WITH MICHELLE KWAN.>>MICHELLE, EVEN THOUGH YOU’VE BEEN SKATING SO WELL, HOW MUCH OF A RELIEF OF IT IS TO GET THE SHORT PROGRAM OVER WITH?>>IT’S VERY NERVE RACKING BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO DO EIGHT ELEMENTS AND PRECISE. I SAW THE AMERICAN FLAG. AND I WENT, OH, I’M AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES. I THOUGHT, READY OR NOT, HERE I GO.>>YOU GAVE US A FEW MOMENTS IN THE WARMUP. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR COMBINATION IN THE WARMUP AND HOW YOU GOT IT TOGETHER FOR THE PROGRAM?>>I THINK I WAS REALLY BE HAPPY TO BE SKATING AND FINALLY BE AT THE OLYMPICS. I WAS GETTING OVERWHELMED AND I WASN’T CONCENTRATING. I HAD THAT ONE MINUTE, I TOOK A DEEP BREATH AND I THOUGHT, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO NOW. I DROPPED EVERYTHING I DID IN WARMUP AND HAD FUN AND ENJOYED MYSELF THERE.>>THE COMBINATION IN THE PROGRAM, I’D LIKE TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT NOW. IT LOOKED TERRIFIC, HOW DID IT FEEL TO YOU?>>WHEN I LANDED, IT DIDN’T FEEL LIKE I DID ANYTHING. I WAS LIKE, WOW, I DID MY TRIPLE LUTZ-DOUBLE TOE. I THINK HERE I FINALLY REALIZED THAT I DID IT AND THEN I JUST SMILED.>>THE OVERALL PROBLEM, WAS THAT AS GOOD AS YOU CAN DO IT?>>YES, I THINK SO. THIS IS THE OLYMPIC GAMES.>CONGRATULATIONS. WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO FRIDAY.>>THANK YOU.>>THERE ARE THREE RUSSIAN LADIES COMPETED IN THE OLYMPICS IN 1998. THE YOUNGEST OF THE TRIO IS ON THE ICE NOW. SHE’S 17 YEARS OF AGE. FROM MOSCOW, HERE IS YELENA SEW COAL HAVE A. SHE FINISHED THIRD IN THE NATIONALS BACK IN DECEMBER. SHE’S THE FIRST YEAR STUDENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF PHYSICAL CULTURE IN MOSCOW.>>SHE MAY BE YOUNG BUT SHE’S GOT SOLID JUMPING TECHNIQUE. THE COMBINATION, TRIPLE LUTZ. SHE SITS DOWN. I’VE NOT SEEN HER DO THAT. GREAT COMBINATION JUMP NORMALLY. TRIPLE LOOP IS NICE, TRIPLE TOE. TRIPLE LUTZ NORMALLY LANDED, .4 DEDUCTION.>>TRIPLE LOOP. DOUBLE AXEL. ARM OVER THE HEAD IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH EXTRA CREDIT SHE GETS FOR THE ARM OVER THE HEAD, IT SEEMS KIND OF DANGEROUS, ALMOST AN IRRESPONSIBLE RISK BUT SHE DID IT. SO WE’LL SEE.>>SHE’S GOT THE BRIGHT EYES, DOESN’T SHE? YELENA SOKOLOVA, A YOUNG LADY WITH REAL POTENTIAL FOR THE RUSSIAN TEAM. SHE COMPETED IN SKATE AMERICA BACK IN DETROIT IN THE FALL WHERE SHE FINISHED THIRD TO MICHELLE KWAN AND TARA LIPINSKI.>>SHE DIDN’T GET THE HEIGHT SHE NEEDED IT LOOKED LIKE IN THE COMBINATION. SHE REACHES BACK WITH THE RIGHT AND VAULTS. NORMALLY IT’S A LITTLE HIGHER THAN THAT. BUT RIGHT THERE IS WHERE SHE HAS HER PROBLEM. YOU CAN SEE THE OTHER LEG CAME OVER, CROSSED A LITTLE BIT TOO MUCH. TWISTED IN THE LANDING, COULDN’T SAVE IT. TRIPLE LOOP, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RESULTS. STRAIGHT UP, STRAIGHT IN. LOOK HOW STRAIGHT SHE IS IN THE AIR. PERFECT LANDING. THE DOUBLE AXEL WITH THE ARM OF THE HEAD IS SO DIFFICULT BECAUSE IT BRINGS YOUR CENTER OF BALANCE UP. YOU SEE THE ARM OVER HER HEAD. SO DIFFICULT FROM CONTROLLING THAT ARM FROM FLYING OVER THE PLACE. THERE’S SO MUCH TORQUE. I’M NOT SURE HOW MUCH CREDIT SHE’LL GET BUT SHE NEEDS EXTRA 10THS BACK. SECOND MARK WILL GO WAY UP. IT’S A VERY CONSTRUCTED PROGRAM. YET TO SKATE, NICOLE BOBEK.
