No ice skating at Deering Oaks this winter

IS HERE TO EXPLAIN WHY. COURTNEY: TRACY, THE ONGOING CONSTRUCTION HERE AT THE POND IS WHY YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO SKATE HERE THIS WINTER. THE BUILD UP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POND, IT BUILDS UP YEAR AFTER YEAR. CITY IS WORKING TO GET CREWS ACCESS TO THE BOTTOM SO THEY CAN CLEAN IT OUT AND THE ONGOING PROJECT IS OF COURSE, ENCROACHING ON WINTER FUN. THE DEERING OAKS POND BOTTOM REPLACEMENT PROJECT IS A $1.1 MILLION UNDERTAKING BY THE CITY TO KEEP THE POND CLEAN. THROUGH FEDERAL STIMULUS MONEY AND CITY FUNDS, CREWS ARE CONSTRUCTING A SYSTEM OF ROADWAYS AND DRAIN PIPES THAT WILL ALLOW THEM ACCESS TO THE BOTTOM OF THE POND FOR CLEANING EVERY 2 YEARS. THOSE ROADS WILL ALLOW TRUCKS TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE POND WHEN ITS DRAINED TO CLEAN OUT BUILDUP OF LEAVES AND OTHER DEBRIS. ETHAN OWENS: THE POND WILL NOT BE FILLED UNTIL THE JUNE TIMEFRAME. THEY’RE GOING TO DO THE BULK OF THEIR WORK PROBABLY UNTIL DECEMBER, WHEN THE WEATHER GETS REALLY BAD. THEN THEY’LL COME BACK IN THE SPRING AND FINISH UP. COURTNEY: FOR THOSE OF YOU WANTING TO ICE SKATE THIS WINTER, THERE ARE OTHER PLACES AROUND THE CITY THAT WILL BE OPEN, INCLUDING PAYSON PARK, LUDLOW POND, AND THE BREAKWATER POND. THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED THIS MARCH. LIVE IN PORTLAND, COURTNEY
