St. Croix River Boater Dead Of Apparent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

THANKS FOR JOINING US, TONIGHT A GRIEVING MOTHER HAS A HEART WRENCHING REMINDER FOR PEOPLE ON BOATS THIS SUMMER AFTER A TRAGIC ACCIDENT TOOK HER DAUGHTER’S LIFE. IT HAPPENED THIS WEEKEND ON THE ST. CROIX RIVER NEAR HUDSON. THREE FRIENDS WERE BOATING WHEN INVESTIGATORS SAY THEY SUFFERED CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING. ONE OF THEM, 24-YEAR-OLD ASHLEY SPEAR OF GLEN WOOD CITY, WISCONSIN DIED AT THE SCENE. JEFF EDMONDSON HAS A MESSAGE FROM HER MOTHER AND UPDATE ON THE OTHER TWO BOATERS. Reporter: ALONG THE BANKS OF THE RIVER, ASHLEY LOVED, INVESTIGATORS SAY SHE SADLY TOOK HER LAST BREATH. LEANING TOWARD A TRAGIC ACCIDENT. Reporter: SPEAR, JUSTIN RAUFKICOSE AND HAYDEN JOHNSON WERE BOATING WHEN AN ENGINE PROBLEM FORCED THEM TO DOCK ON THE BEACH FOR THE NIGHT. AS HOURS WENT ON, POLICE WERE EVENTUALLY CALLD TO DO A WELFARE CHECK BECAUSE NOBODY ON THE BOAT WAS ANSWERING THEIR PHONES. THEY BOARDED THE BOAT, OBSERVED ONE PERSON LYING IN THE CABIN, AND ONCE THEY MADE ENTRY, TWO OTHERS. Reporter: RAUFKOSE AND JOHNSON GIVEN MEDICAL ATTENTION, BUT TOO LATE FOR SPEAR. IT WAS APPARENT MEASURES WERE NOT GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. Reporter: INVESTIGATORS SAY A PROVISIONAL AUTOPSY REPORT SHOWED SPEAR HAD HIGH LEVELS OF CARBON MONOXIDE IN HER BLOOD, THEY SAY THERE WAS A CO DETECTOR ON BOARD, BUT SPEAR’S MOTHER STILL FEELS HER DAUGHTER’S DEATH WAS PREVENTABLE. TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ASK EVERYONE TO INSTALL A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR IN YOUR HOMES, BOATS, AND RVS, AS WE HOPE NO FAMILY HAS TO FEEL THIS PAIN. Reporter: A YOUNG LOST LIFE. SHE LOVED HER JOBS, FRIENDS, HORSES, DOGS, VOLLEY BALL, A GOOD SOMETIME ON THE RIVER AND FAMILY. Reporter: THE TWO ARE AT THE MEDICAL HENNEPIN CENTER. JOHNSON IS STABLE. WE WISH THEM WELL. THIS MIGHT REMIND SOME PEOPLE OF SOMETHING CALLED SOFIA’S LAW, NAMED AFTER A YOUNG GIRL WITH A SIMILAR STORY. Reporter: 7-YEAR-OLD SOFIA DIED FROM CO POISONING WHILE SLEEPING IN HER FAMILY’S BOAT IN 2015, THE MINNESOTA LAW REQUIRES CERTAIN BOATS TO HAVE CO DETECTORS AND IT WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE EFFECT IN MAY.
