Surfers Gather To Honor FDNY Firefighter Killed On 9/11


WEDNESDAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE 9/11 TERROR ATTACKS, IN QUEENS A GROUP OF YOUNG SURFERS IS REMEMBERING A HERO FIREFIGHTER, CBS2 NEWS, MARK, SHOWS US HOW THEY ARE PAYING TRIBUTE TO RICHIE ALLEN. ONE MAN’S LOVE FOR A SPORT LIVING ON IN A NEW GENERATION, EMAIL EVEN AFTER HE IS GONE. THAT IS WHAT THE 15th ANNUAL RICHIE ALLEN MEMORIAL SERF CLASS AT ROCKAWAY BEACH IN QUEENS IS ALL ABOUT. THEY GET TO KNOW THE STORY OF 9/11. Reporter: THE STORY OF 9/11, AND OF GAIL ALLEN’S SON, RICHIE, A NEW YORK CITY FIREFIGHTER WHO WAS KILLED THAT DAY 18 YEARS AGO. HIS BROTHER REMEMBERS THE LAST TIME THEY TALKED, THE NIGHT BEFORE THE ATTACK. HE HAD TO WORK THE NIGHT BEFORE. HE WAS GOING TO TRY TO COME HOME AND SERF AND THEN GO BACK TO WORK. AND THEN THE ALARMS WENT OFF AND THEY ALL RESPONDED. HE DIDN’T GET ANY SURFING THAT DAY. Reporter: LUKE AND THE REST OF HIS FAMILY WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT PASSION, THAT LOVE FOR THE WAVES WAS KEPT ALIVE. THERE IS RICHIE ON THE LEFT, SURFING WITH A BUDDY. THIS IS A WAY TO BRING HIS SPIRIT INTO TODAY. Reporter: MORE THAN 80 CAN KIDS ARE COMPETING IN THE EVENT AND THERE ARE PRIZES BUT THIS IS MOSTLY ABOUT THE FUN, AND TO HONOR RICHIE’S MEMORY. WHEN YOU’RE OUT THERE AND YOU REALIZE THAT YOU ARE SURFING FOR SOMEBODY ELSE, IT JUST FEELS REALLY GOOD. Reporter: RICHIE WAS 31 YEARS OLD WHEN HE DIED, A FORMER LIFEGUARD HE HAD BEEN A FIREFIGHTER FOR JUST SIX MONTHS, RESPONDING TO A TERROR ATTACK THAT NONE OF THESE KIDS WERE EVEN ALIVE TO SEE. A MAN WHO GREW UP SURFING AT ROCKAWAY BEACH. HE WAS AN AVID MEMBER OF THIS COMMUNITY. IT IS ALL ABOUT RESPECT OUT YOUR. Reporter: THEY DO IT WITH PRIDE. I THINK THAT IS THE NICEST PART.
